The route is definitely challenging, but truly fascinating: climbing up the Trento mountain, you go along the route which was made famous by the mythical endeavour performed by Charly Gaul on the 8th of June 1956, when he won this race and then went on to win the Giro d’Italia reaching the finish line under a snowstorm. Less expert athletes can take the down-hill route to Trento, provincial capital of Trentino, a city rich in art and history. The route involves the traditional slopes facing the city and the Garniga Terme side, a tourist location famous for its herbal baths and phytobath therapy.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE ROUTE:
The route starts at the bridge of San Lorenzo in Trento. Follow the signs for Cadine, the road is paved and is uphill. Watch out for the cars and ride in Indian file. After a bend to the left in Ca dei Gai, turn left, you start an uphill paved road, use a low gear. The lovely panorama of the city of Trento rewards you for your fatigue. When you reach San Antonio the road connects to the main road. After about 300 metres turn left and climb on a dirt road up to a small Church at Sardagna. Cross the inhabited area of Sardagna, and on your right you will see a fountain. After leaving the town you will pedal about 500 m on the main road and then take a dirt road on your left. This dirt road starts with a steep climb and then climbs only slightly. Go across the highway and take the paved road of Camponzin which leads you to the road going up from Sopramonte towards Monte Bondone. Turn left and continue on the county road for about 600 m until the road widens considerably. Turn right and going across a comfortable forest road you will reach the mountain hut Baita delle Alpi and then the dairy Malga Brigolina. Here you will find a rest area and a nice fountain. After Malga Brigolina you continue on a dirt road with some paved stretches up to the car park of Mezzavia. From this point you keep climbing on a dirt road following the signs for Viote del Bondone. The dirt road ends on the county road going from the Valle dei Laghi up to Monte Bondone. Turn left and after about 500 metres turn right. You are now at the cross-country skiing centre of the Viote del Monte Bondone. Proceed on this road following the signs leading to Garniga Vecchia. While pedalling you can admire the valley depression of the Viote with the Tre Cime (Three peaks) in the background. You will also notice a car park and a bar on your right. Take this road, it is a dirt road with some patches of grass. You will reach a dirt road, turn right, the road begins to climb briefly immersed in a green area. The descent is very pleasant and fun on a dirt road, continue down until you see a path on your right leading to Malga Albi. Be very careful on the first stretch of the path, if you are not sure of yourself, get off and walk your bike down. Then you can get back on your bike. Once you reach Malga Albi the dirt road ends and you continue on a paved road up to the village of Gatter where you will continue on the main road up to Garniga Nuova. From here you go towards Zobio, go through it and continue until you reach a capital. Turn left, and go downhill to Aldeno. This descent is very beautiful but has some difficult stretches, so be careful and walk if you don’t feel sure of yourself. Some parts of the road are paved and some are dirt with visible stony areas. The panorama is lovely. Once you reach Aldeno go on the right bank of the river Adige northward. After about 1.8 km turn right and before reaching the bridge on the river Adige, turn left. You are now on the cycling route leading to Trento.
